Report Summary
This is the first sustainability report independently released by Huaneng Power International, Inc. It reviews the opportunities and challenges of the Company in 2009 and describes the concept, practice and performance concerning actively fulfilling its responsibilities for economy, safety, environment, employees, and the community in pursuit of sustainable development.
Preparation Basis
This Report is prepared in compliance with the Guideline on Fulfilling Social Responsibility by Central Enterprises issued by SASAC, the Notification on Strengthening the Fulfillment of Social Responsibility by Listed Companies and the Guideline on Disclosing Environmental Information of Companies Listed in Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) issued by SSE, and refers to the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (Edition 2006) issued by GRI and the Guideline on Preparing Social Responsibility Report by Chinese Enterprises issued by CSR Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The schedule of this Report ranges from Jan. 1, 2009 to Dec. 31, 2009, with some expressions and data appropriately dating back to earlier years.

Scope of the Report
This Report mainly involves Huaneng Power International, Inc and its domestic affiliated branches, wholly-owned and holding companies (including those acquired and delivered in 2009), and covers five fields: economy, safety, environment, employees and the community.

Anaphora Rule
For convenience of expression, “Huaneng Power International, Inc” herein also refers to “Huaneng International”, “the Company”, or “we”. The currency “Yuan” herein is RMB Yuan. The domestic affiliated units of the Company indicate its domestic affiliated branches, wholly-owned and holding companies. The domestic affiliated power plants of the Company refer to its domestic affiliated wholly-owned and holding power generation enterprises.
