Shanghai Shidongkou Second Power Plant (the "Shanghai Power Plant" in short) had originally been developed, constructed and operated by the HIPDC which transferred all its rights and interests therein to the Company effective 1st July, 1997.
Located on the outskirts of the city of Shanghai, the Shanghai Power Plant has an installed capacity of 1,200MW and consists of two 600MW coal-fired units supplied by an international consortium leading by Sargent & Lundy. The two units commenced operation in June and December, respectively.
Coal supply for the Shanghai Power Plant is obtained from several coal producers located mostly in the Shen Fu Coal Mines. Coal is transported by rail from the mines to Qinhuangdao port and by ship to the wharf located at the Shanghai Power Plant. The wharf is capable of handling 25,000 ton vessels and can typically store approximately 200,000 tons of coal on site. Coal consumption rates for power sold were 312gram/kWh and 311gram/kWh for the years of 1999 and 2000, respectively. Currently, electricity generated by the Shanghai Power Plant is delivered to the China East Power Grid for sale.
Shanghai Shidongkou 1st Power Plant (previously known as Shanghai Shidongkou Power Plant, Shanghai Shidongkou Power Generation Ltd.) is located in Shengqiao, Baoshan District, Shanghai. It is boardered by Bao Steel on the east, connected to Huaneng Shanghai Shidongkou 2nd Power Plant on the west, facing the Yangtze River to the north and downtown Shanghai to the south. Being a mega enterprise and the first modern port power station exceeding 1000MW in installed capacity within the Shanghai Power Grid, the power plant was a state-designated priority energy project during the Seventh Five-Year Plan Period. It comprises 4 domestically-made 300MW improved-type power generating units. The project was set up in April 1982, and construction commenced in April 1985. The power plant was planned and designed in one phase and construction was conducted in a continuous manner. The four units respectively commenced commercial operation in February 1988, December 1988, September 1989 and May 1990. On January 1, 2003, this power plant became fully owned by Huaneng Power International, Inc.
