Nantong Power Plant is located in the city of Nantong. It has an installed capacity of 1,400MW and consists of four 350MW coal-fired units which commenced commercial operations in September 1989 and March 1990, respectively. The units of Phase I use equipment produced by General Electric and The Babcock & Wilcox Company. Another two 350,000 units of Phase II were supplied by an international consortium consisting of General Electric and The Babcock & Wilcox Company and commenced operations in April and July 1999, respectively.
Coal supply for the Nantong Power Plant is obtained from several coal producers located mostly in northern Shanxi Province. Coal is transported by rail from the mines to Qinhuangdao port and by ship to Yaogang, 7.5 kilometers from the Nantong Power Plant, where it is transshipped onto Company barges for the last stage of the journey up the Yangtze River to the wharf located at the Nantong Power Plant. The Company owns and maintains the wharf which is capable of handling 5,000 ton barges. The Nantong Power Plant typically stores 200,000 tons of coal on site. Coal consumption rates for power sold were 326gram/kWh for Phase I and 341gram/kWh for Phase II in 1999; and 327gram/kWh for Phase I and 329gram/kWh for Phase II in 2000. Currently, electricity generated by the Nantong Power Plant is delivered to the Jiangsu Provincial Power Grid for sale.
