The Shangan Power Plant is located on the outskirts of Shijiazhuang. It has an installed capacity of 1,300MW and consists of four coal-fired units. Two 350MW units of Phase I use equipment produced by General Electric and The Babcock & Wilcox Company and commenced operations in August and December 1990, respectively. The Shangan Power Plant Phase II utilizes two 300MW units supplied by Dongfang Group and commenced operations in the last six months of 1997.
Coal supply for the Shangan Power Plant is obtained from numerous coal producers in central Shanxi Province, approximately 64 kilometers from the Shangan Power Plant. Coal is transported by rail from the mines to the Shangan Power Plant which typically stores 250,000 tons of coal on site. Coal consumption rates for power sold were 333gram/kWh for Phase I and 349gram/kWh for Phase II in 1999; and 333gram/kWh for Phase I and 346gram/kWh for Phase II in 2000. Currently, electricity generated by the Shangan Power Plant is delivered to the South of Hebei Provincial Power Grid for sale.
